Heat kills more than the roads

Heat now kills more people in Switzerland than road accidents.

The Le Temps newspaper reports 326 heat-related deaths across the country in 2024, exceeding both the road toll and firearm fatalities.

Citing a study in Nature Medicine, it estimates 56,000 heat deaths a year across the EU and Switzerland between 2022 and 2024.

June's heatwave alone may have killed 20,000 people on the continent, according to early figures.

The paper highlights record cooling demand in Geneva and argues restrictive Swiss rules are pushing households toward inefficient mobile air conditioners.
