Govt to make sure basic supplies are maintained

The government is to boost the office which is in charge of making sure the country has enough food and other essential supplies.

At the beginning of the pandemic some essential shortfalls were obvious – especially medical equipment.

The ongoing crises in Ukraine means more government intervention is required, says the Federal Council.

While Switzerland’s needs are served essentially by a market economy – and that’s not going to change – the Economic Supply Office will see its staff boosted by 12.

Federal Councillor Guy Parmelin says the country lacks self-sufficiency in vegetable oils and wheat.

The government recommends that households should store nine litres of water per person and have enough food for a week at all times.

Also there should be a reserve of basic medications as well as batteries, flashlights and facilities to cook without electricity.
