Geneva wants to end rush hour

Canton Geneva is urging private companies to come up with ideas on how to stagger the working day to reduce pressure on public transport and the roads.

Local business groups are in agreement something needs to be done and it’s also in the best interests of business.

The canton itself will be bringing in measures for workers of state-run organisations.

Any changes to the working day should encourage people not to use a car to commute and to avoid traditionally busy times. More home-working will also be part of the measures.

Cantonal minister Serge del Busco says time wasted by people in traffic jams cuts profitability and eats into tax revenue.

But there are some government regulations that are causing problems. Federal worker protection laws need to be looked at and French rules that say frontaliers can’t work from home unless they pay French social security charges. Although a pandemic exemption is in place until the end of the month.

One thing that won’t be happening though is taxing work place parking slots. A rejection of that idea at the ballot box is a foregone conclusion.
