A public sector strike coincided with the return to Geneva classrooms yesterday, but the impact on schools was limited
The Education Department says only around 140 teachers walked out in total, compared with 1.100 in June and 1,900 in April. Around 500 people joined an evening protest against the cantonal government's planned spendking cuts, which could reach CHF 500 million. Unions say the low turnout reflects teacher's priorities to welcome pupils at the start of term, and expect a bigger showing today. The government is due to lay out its austerity measures next month
