The head of the company that runs them, Vincent Pellissier, told Swiss French TV that it needs CHF 600m to renew the fleet.
Six of the eight ships are not seaworthy. The latest boat taken out of service is ‘La Suisse’ which recently suffered some damage and is now docked.
That alone means 3,000 passenger crossings have been cancelled.
A plan is being drawn up for shareholders to raise the cash – the cantons of Geneva, Vaud and Valais, own 57% .
