Geneva job losses concern

Job cuts at the UN's Geneva-based health and food agencies will weaken food safety worldwide according to report

Both the World Health Organization and the Food and Agriculture Organization — the two bodies that set the international rules keeping food safe — are shedding hundreds of posts as the United States and other donors slash humanitarian funding.

The reductions land on the very agencies that national regulators, Swissmedic included, lean on for global standards.

For the thousands of staff who anchor International Geneva, and for the wider Swiss economy tied to it, the cuts extend a difficult year for the UN's presence in the city.
