Geneva government under fire for march ban

Geneva authorities are under fire from many sides following the decision to ban all marches in the city today.

Various protest groups are united in calling the ban undemocratic and claims it violates the Geneva Constitution which gives the right to protest.

But the cantonal government minister, Mauro Poggia, says the decision is based on security and mobility concerns. He says there is not a right for all protest to turn into a march.

Groups are allowed to gather on the Plainpalais. Poggia points out there are thousands of representatives from the international media in the city and it will be possible for groups to get their views aired.
