Geneva paediatricians working in hospital emergency rooms are threatening to start an open-ended strike from December in protest at the removal of an emergency allowance to compensate for weekend and overnight call outs.
The decision was made by the Geneva Paediatric Society which has 170 members.
It’s a decision by health insurers which has caused the unrest. They’re refusing to pay a CHF 40 call out fee for night and weekend work. It was challenged in court, but the judges sided with the insurance companies.
They’re even demanding the payments for the last five years back – which can amount to several hundred thousand francs.
It means that a sick child will have to go to the emergency rooms with all the other patients and can’t be treated at specialized clinics - which has been the case up to now.
