Geneva allows more boar to be culled

It’s a bad time to be a boar – as in the wild pig.

Canton Geneva says it will extend the cull on the animals for the next two years due to the increasing amount of damage they’re causing to crops.

Geneva is the only canton in the country which has banned hunting, which it did in 1974. The only people allowed to shoot wildlife are the cantonal game keepers.

Last season 300 animals were killed.

The canton pays compensation to farmers who lose crops.

Now there will be more boar killed – attention is back on the deer, which are partial to the vineyards and orchards.

But the meat doesn’t go to waste. It’s sold through local butchers at a price agreed with the authorities.
