G7 underway in Evian

The G7 summit opened in Évian yesterday with the possible peace deal between Iran and the US pushed to the top of the agenda.

Donald Trump arrived at Geneva airport in the afternoon, welcomed by President Guy Parmelin, before heading on to Évian by helicopter.

Washington and Tehran have agreed in principle to ease the closure of the Strait of Hormuz, raising hopes among Western leaders of progress on other strategic files including Ukraine.

Volodymyr Zelensky is due to join a working session today in search of stronger backing from allies.

The Ukrainian leader also arrived in Geneva yesterday.

Before heading to the summit, Zelensky and Parmelin discussed Bern's good offices, Ukraine's reconstruction, and the free trade agreement under negotiation between Switzerland and Kyiv.
