Geneva will not have a World Cup fan zone next year.
The State Council confirmed it will not authorize large public events in the city center from June 1st to 28th – which is slap bang in the middle of the opening weeks of the tournament.
The reason is safety - Geneva police will be heavily mobilized for the G7 summit taking place across the lake in Evian from June 14th to 16th.
City officials say smaller, local fan zones might still be possible, but anything on the scale of previous World Cup gatherings is off the table.
Lausanne is also reviewing its plans, though a decision there isn’t expected before January.
