Police investigating a series of fires around the Solothurn region have made an arrest – press reports suggest it’s a 33-year-old firefighter who also works for a fire protection company.

It’s thought as many as 13 fires in one area of the canton – and at least one more in neighbouring canton Bern – were started deliberately. The main targets were large wooden buildings.

The suspect lives near the site of many of the suspicious fires and has links with many of the people and organisations that owned the buildings.

A court has ordered the suspect to be detained while further investigations are carried out.
