Fears drive sleeping and iodine pill demand

The general concern over the situation in Ukraine is being seen at pharmacies across the country.

Pharmacists say there is more demand for sleeping pills and tranquilizers as well as iodine pills.

Iodine is a preventative measure in case of radiation poisoning.

The Swiss Society of Pharmacists say the demand for iodine is being driven by fears of a nuclear accident in Ukraine as well as threats by Putin to put Russia’s nuclear arsenal on alert.

Experts point out iodine should only be taken if the government says there’s a nuclear emergency – and then the pills would be handed out for free.

The health insurer Helsana says while the Ukrainian conflict is certainly having an effect – it’s still too early to draw any definitive conclusions.
