The Geneva Euro 2024 fan zone is being described as a broad success, but those stands offering food say they only covered their costs – and no more.
Police say there were no major problems and only a few arrests.
During the tournament, attendance was mixed. There were large crowds for the games with Switzerland, Portugal, France and Spain. However other matches, such as the England/Netherlands game, only attracted 6,000.
But it was capacity for the final, 16,500 watched.
One restauranteur running a food stand says he paid the rental costs of CHF 46,000 – but he got the money back but no more. He says the bars did much better business as people want to drink while watching – but not eat.
He also complained about the one day the weather closed the zone – he says there should be compensation for the loss of business as that was determined by the city because of worries of lightening strikes.
