An increase in card payments and other electronic payment systems is leading to a decrease in tipping.
Tips paid digitally must be recorded in company accounts, unlike tips given in cash - reports the NZZ am Sonntag. They explain that restaurants report tips on employees' pay slips. Manuel Wiesner, who runs restaurants with his family, told the newspaper that this practice allows employees to benefit from a higher pension.
The staff themselves, however, often oppose the declaration of tips on their salary slips, because taxes and social charges lower salaries.
