Switzerland has moved to its highest drought alert, according to Blick, as rivers run dry and grasslands burn.

The paper's photo essay calls the current dry spell historic, showing cracked earth and empty riverbeds.

The escalation adds a formal warning to what residents already see - a summer of heatwaves that has drained water tables, killed hundreds of thousands of fish and left the federal environment minister admitting surprise at its intensity.
