Couples married in the French speaking regions are more likely to divorce than their German speaking counterparts – but marriages overall are likely to last longer now than 10 years ago.
Figures from the Federal Statistics Office show across the country 39.7% of marriages in 2022 will end in divorce – but in Geneva that number 46.8%.
Other French speaking cantons also show higher divorce rates than German speaking areas -the rate in Zurich is more than 10% better at 34.2%.
But the good news for newly married couples is that divorce rates are falling. In 2005 the average rate was 50.7%, now it’s ten percent less.
