The cross-border town of Divonne-les-Bains is reeling after a 20-year-old daycare worker was charged with raping a four-year-old girl in his care.
The arrest happened last Thursday in full view of children and staff at the Arc-en-Ciel after-school centre.
The Bourg-en-Bresse prosecutor's office opened a formal judicial investigation on Saturday and the man, who has no prior record, has been remanded in custody.
Divonne sits just across the border and is a popular Swiss-side residence for frontalier families.
