Dead and missing after storms

Rebuilding A13 in GR (c) Federal Roads Office

Six people are now missing after the massive storms that hit the country over the weekend. Five in canton Ticino and one in Valais.

Three have already been found dead in Ticino and police have confirmed the death of a man in Valais.

The president, Viola Amherd, has been touring the devastation in Ticino. A road bridge in the Maggia Valley has been washed away and several villages are severely damaged.

In Valais, clear up teams of more than a thousand people are now working clear rubble. The man who died in the village of Saas-Grund has been named as a 67 year old man who was in the basement of his house collecting belongings before being swamped with flood water.

Flooded sections of the A9 autoroute in Valais have now reopened after water was pumped away. The road was only lightly damaged.

The A13 in canton Graubünden could reopen by the end of the week after a 24 hour operation to rebuild the washed away section.
