The Federal Administrative Court has stopped plans for extending Geneva's Tram 15 to Saint-Julien-en-Genevois.
The court overturned Bern's 2023 approval for the second stretch, linking Plan-les-Ouates industrial zone to the French border via Perly.
Local shopkeepers had opposed the tracks, fearing the removal of transit traffic would kill their businesses, and the court also cited farmland lost to a planned detour road.
Geneva's Council of State will now study the ruling with transport operator TPG and federal officials before deciding what happens next.
