The cantons are struggling to keep up with mandatory vehicle inspections, leaving more than 550,000 checks overdue nationwide.
According to the Federal Roads Office, many cantonal inspection authorities are months - and in some cases more than a year - behind schedule.
Zurich alone accounts for more than 160,000 delayed inspections. The Roads Office is demanding cantons to reduce the backlog and prioritise older vehicles.
