Cancer treatments could be banned due to vote

This country may be barred from using thousands of different types of medication if an upcoming vote passes.

An initiative which aims to ban animal testing and the use of drugs that were developed by being tested on animals, goes to the vote on February 13th.

Michael Altorfer – head of the Swiss Biotech Association – says if the vote passes it would threaten healthcare in Switzerland.

He says the part of the referendum which would ban the use of drugs that had been tested on animals means many cancer treatments would not be available – and he points out any new antibiotics would also be forbidden.

He adds this country already has some of the strongest animal welfare laws and strict rules on clinical trials in the world.
