Basel police have refused permission for a stand-up protest against antisemitism during the Eurovision Song Contest, which starts this week.
In particular, the organisers of the protest say they wanted to fight back against the anger directed at the Israeli contestant, Yuval Raphael.
The police say they cannot guarantee the safety of the protestors and those around them – and risk creating counter protests.
Pro-Palestinian supporters have been holding unauthorized demonstrations – using the slogan, ‘Escalate for Palestine’ – which the authorities are not seeing as calling for peace.
