Vaud is preparing to map every school building in the canton to identify the classrooms most vulnerable to extreme heat
Education chief Frédéric Borloz announced the plan on Wednesday, ahead of Monday's back-to-school for nearly 136,000 pupils. Twenty-seven schools had to close classes or send children home during June's heatwave.
Rather than air-conditioning the canton's 700 buildings and 6,500 classrooms –which Borloz called disproportionate – Vaud will test ceiling fans in post-compulsory schools, aiming to lower the felt temperature by two to five degrees.
Teaching unions say the response is too slow and are demanding an immediate heat plan for schools.
