Women get a 20% discount in Geneva

The City of Geneva has passed a motion to allow women a 20% discount into entry to sports centres and cultural institutions.

Backers say its to highlight the continuing discrepancy in pay between men and women.

One of the supporters, Brigitte Studer, says it’s been the law since 1996 that men and women should be paid the same – and yet it’s still not happening.

Others say the discount will only benefit the advantaged anyway – those on more limited means rarely visit a sports centre or museum.

Federal figures show that across the country women earn 20% less than men.

Studer does admit the move is mainly symbolic.
