A woman has revealed how years of fare evasion on the rail network spiralled into CHF 80,000 debt and repeated jail terms.
The unnamed woman told the Sonntagszeitung newspaper she spent 15 years dodging ticket inspectors on trains, hiding in luggage racks and children’s play areas to avoid detection.
Unpaid fines and legal costs mounted rapidly, leaving her unable to open a bank account or rent a home.
She was able to pay off her debts after an inheritance of CHF 100,000 which allowed her to clear the debt.
She now says she always travels with a valid ticket.
