Warning of Xmas traffic jams

Motorists should brace for heavy traffic over the Christmas holidays.

The Federal Roads Office warns of major slowdowns on key autoroutes, especially around Zurich, Bern, Basel, Lucerne and Lugano, as well as the Gotthard and San Bernardino routes.

The office also expects a strong wave of return traffic from January 1st to 4th and cautions that drivers using local roads to bypass jams could overwhelm towns and increase accident risks.

Several stretches, including the routes around Zurich, the Lucerne region and the approaches to the Bernese Oberland and Valais, are listed as particularly affected.
