Two women who went cross country skiing near La Chapelle d’Abondance in Haute-Savoie close to the Swiss border, have been found dead after being buried by an avalanche.
The alarm was raised when they failed to return to work, and their car was discovered at the start of a touring route.
A helicopter search located signals from their avalanche beacons beneath a large snowslide.
The bodies were recovered at depths of one and a half metres.
Avalanche risk in the area is rated considerable.
Their deaths bring the season’s toll in France to thirty.
