Momentum of the switch to green energy could be curbed in Switzerland by two federal popular initiatives aiming to halt the expansion of wind turbines.
Paysage Libre Suisse, who proposed the initiatives, has already gathered more than 120’000 signatures.
The first initiative proposes that no wind turbines should be built within 150 meters of any forests or densely wooded areas. In the canton of Zurich, however, this would directly affect 96 of the 100 wind turbines planned.
The second initiative proposes that the municipalities in the host area and surrounding areas be given a deciding vote on whether the turbines should be built at that location.
Politicians from both the left and right reject the initiatives and urge people to pursue green energy initiatives.
