The Council of States has agreed that European Union students at Switzerland's federal polytechnic schools should pay the same tuition fees as Swiss nationals
Under the deal with Brussels, EU citizens at ETH Zurich or EPFL would no longer face the higher foreign rate.
Swiss students going to EU universities would gain the same equal treatment in return.
Senators rejected extending the arrangement to students from EFTA countries, arguing reciprocity there must be negotiated first.
Tuition for students from outside the EU would still need to be at least three times higher than the Swiss rate.
