Ticino wine growers excited by this year's crop

Despite this year’s drought and the worry that many wine growers had for their crops – those in Ticino are cheering as they expect a bumper harvest and the best quality wine for years.

One wine maker says it was an August storm which saved the day. Rudy Studer who has 4 hectares of vines says they were very worried, but then the rain came in August and the crop was secured. He says the grapes are some of the biggest he’s ever seen and the sugar quality is so high – there won’t be a need for additives.

Many farmers have been harvesting their grapes earlier than usual as they’re ready. Another grower says on balance, the drought didn’t harm the vines.

But it is being pointed out - although the wine is expected to be of an excellent quality – the lack of water means there will be a little less of it.
