Ticino farmers sound alarm over drought

Farmers in canton Ticino are sounding the alarm as they say the record winter drought is giving them real problems.

There hasn’t been any real rainfall for the last four months – and there’s no sign of that changing.

The Ticino cantonal farmers association says if there isn’t any rain in the next few weeks – the sector will be in crises.

All areas of farming are affected – from wine to livestock.

Farmers are having to irrigate artificially and with the rising cost of fuel - that’s becoming more and more expensive.

It’s not just farms suffering. The Federal Landscape Research Institute says forests are also showing signs of stress.
