Switzerland condemns Ukraine invasion

Switzerland says the invasion of Ukraine by Russia is a gross violation of international law and is urging Russia to end all military aggression and withdraw.

It says it’s very concerned for innocent lives.

The foreign ministry says it will not impose any sanctions of its own, but will support those imposed by the EU.

In practical terms that means if the EU freezes assets of those on its sanctions list, Swiss banks will not be able to accept further funds from those people.

The government says the move is designed to protect the Swiss role for providing good offices for any mediation and also points out this country represents diplomatic interests of Russia in Georgia and those of Georgia in Moscow.
