Switzerland's largest party is warning that the country's new treaty package with the European Union would let criminals cross the border freely, a claim legal experts call vastly exaggerated.
The Swiss People’s Party is now targeting the treaties agreed with Brussels in December 2024.
Party deputy Roman Bürgi blames the Schengen system for what he calls a spike in armed robberies by people arriving on French plates and slipping out again within hours.
Francesco Maiani, professor of European law at the University of Lausanne, told The Local the claim does not hold up.
A referendum on the treaty package is expected sometime next year.
