The chairman of a local Swiss People’s Party branch in canton Bern has quit his post after being attacked by fellow party members for ‘not being a real Swiss’ due to the fact his partner is black.
The couple have two children.
David Spring says his family was regularly racially abused. In his resignation letter, which has been seen by the Berner Zeitung newspaper, he writes that racist views are incompatible with the values of the Swiss People’s Party – which are respect, decency and responsibility.
He adds that he hopes the Ittigen branch of the party will return to the path of a respectful and non-populist policy.
