Since 2019, cigarettes have only been allowed in marked zones, but in practice many ignore the rules, sparking complaints from non-smokers.
Now, the SBB is testing a crackdown at five busy stations — Zurich, Solothurn, Biel, Burgdorf and La Chaux-de-Fonds.
New signs remind travellers: smoking and vaping are forbidden except near ashtrays.
The aim is to raise awareness, cut smoke exposure, and reduce the piles of cigarette butts that drive up cleaning costs.
The trial runs for six months.
