Russia says Switzerland is not neutral

Russia is publicly attacking Switzerland's neutrality just two months before Swiss voters decide whether to enshrine it in the Constitution.

The Russian embassy in Bern has issued a statement claiming the country is no longer neutral, citing joint exercises with NATO, sanctions against Moscow, and looser rules on arms exports.

Opponents of the Swiss People’s Party backed initiative call it foreign interference and warn against letting the Kremlin lecture Switzerland on democracy.

If passed in September, the text would bar Switzerland from adopting future EU sanctions, including those imposed after the invasion of Ukraine.
