Pensioner becomes unwitting YouTube star after level-crossing blunder

A pensioner is facing the wrath of social media after a video of him pushing his 2-year-old granddaughter in a stroller through a closed level crossing went viral.

The 78-year-old, who lives in Roggwil in canton Bern, says he was 100% certain another train wasn’t coming after the first train had passed, stopped at the station and moved on.

He didn’t realise someone was filming the event until it was shown to him on YouTube.

He hasn’t been formally reported and he says he hasn't heard from the police. His son says he can continue to look after his granddaughter.

For the record: Swiss Federal Railways say you shouldn’t cross a level crossing if the barrier is down or lights are flashing, even if you’ve seen the train pass – as another may be coming.
