Parents of seriously ill children will now be compensated for loss of earnings if they have to take time off work to look after their child.
The government says the new rules will apply from July.
Parents can share the 14-week allowance – and spread it out over 18 months. It will include infants if they have to stay in hospital after birth – but it won’t affect the 8 weeks mothers already have off work following the birth of a child.
The move is part of a programme adopted by he government to reconcile the needs of professional activities with family obligations.
