Major project begins to repair crumbling road in the canton of Vaud

A major project is underway to repair a road that had become unsafe due to heavy traffic and harsh weather conditions in the canton of Vaud.

The RC 719 connects the resorts of Villars-sur-Ollon and Gryon.

Cantonal authorities say that just over half a kilometre of the road was in a critical condition and in desperate need of repair.

The engineering works will include a new bridge to provide a safe route for both road and rail traffic.

Major works took place in 2011 and 2017 to shore up the road but the geography of the area has meant that more serious remedies had become necessary.

Work began yesterday on a completely redesigned road system between Villars-sur-Ollon and La Barboleuse.

Currently, more than 2,500 vehicles use the route each day.

The works will also include the creation of a new railway track. The project is expected to cost more than 50 million francs and is scheduled to be completed in 2026.
