Opponents of the law which will force the TV streaming giants to invest 4% of their Swiss income in Swiss films has collected enough signatures to put the issue to the vote.
At the end of last year parliament agreed to the measure as part of a series of incentives to encourage film making in the country.
Those opposed to the law, which has been nicknamed ‘Lex Netflix’, says it will drive up subscription prices – or could even persuade the streaming companies not to serve Switzerland.
Netflix charges Swiss users the most in the world, but an analysis of what’s on offer shows Swiss users have one of the largest choices of TV shows and films available on the platform.
Campaigners against the law say it’s illiberal and violates freedom of business.
Voters will have their say in May.
