Italy is helping to evacuate Swiss nationals from Sudan, along with its own nationals and members of the Vatican Embassy.

The Italian government says it is bringing home around 200 people, which includes Swiss. But no exact numbers are being released.

Fierce fighting has broken out in the Sudanese capital Khartoum and the western region of Darfur. Hundreds have been killed and thousands injured.

The Swiss foreign ministry says it’s continually examining ways to safely evacuate citizens and embassy staff – sometimes in conjunction with other countries.
