Hopes of free trade deal with US

Some right-wing politicians hope that the new Trump Whitehouse will restart talks on a free trade agreement with Switzerland.

Talks were ongoing when Joe Biden took over – but he stopped them.

National Councillor Magdalena Martullo Blocher from the Swiss People’s Party has said she promises Bern will start talking to the US again.

But it’s been tried before and failed – mainly due to resistance from farmers who say a deal with the US would mean food imports that don’t confirm to Swiss standards – such as GMO crops and hormone fed beef.

It’s the reason then first talks failed 20 years ago.
