Geneva voters to decide on wealth tax

Geneva voters will get an opportunity to have their say on whether the wealthy should be subject to a temporary wealth tax to pay for the effects of the pandemic.

Campaigners have submitted almost 7,000 signatures to put the issue to a vote.

The text of the initiative calls for all those with more than CHF 3m to pay an extra half a percent in tax. The tax would be valid for 10 years.

If the vote passes, it’s thought it will bring in CHF 350 m every year for the canton and a further CHF 85 m for the communes.

Geneva deputy for the Ensemble à Gauche, Jean Batou, says the rich have seen their wealth grow enormously over the last few years and will still be paying less if there hadn’t been the tax cuts since 1999.
