Research by Swiss French Television is revealing how much rents in Geneva climb each time a property changes hands – even if no renovation work has been carried out.
In many cases, rent can rise by as much as 50% - in one example rent doubled with no renovation.
Geneva laws allow property owners to reset the rent each time a tenant moves out.
Figures from the Cantonal Statistics Office show in the vast majority of changes rents increase by a least 20%.
