The Socialist Party in Geneva is launching an initiative to make contraception free for everyone.
The party says contraception should not be a luxury.
All methods would be covered – from condoms to IUD.
Basic health insurance doesn’t include contraception. The pill is CHF 40 a month and fitting an IUD can cost CHF 400.
Geneva has the highest abortion rate in the country, at 10.5 per 1,000 women.
The Socialist Party says it would be an investment, and points out a similar scheme in the US state of Colorado ended up saving the state money by cutting unwanted pregnancies.
Campaigners need to collect 5,500 signatures before the end of the year to get the idea on the ballot paper.
