Basel police have arrested a 30-year-old man after a 60-year-old woman was shot dead in a park on Sunday afternoon.

The woman was a well-known local dog trainer who had lived in the area for a long time. Locals described her as friendly and upbeat.

The woman was taking a walk in a park near her home in Ziefen in canton Basel Country. Police say she was shot with a hand gun that was likely to have been bought privately.

Press reports suggest the arrested man was related to the victim.

Investigations are ongoing.
