The consumption of online adult content by young people in Switzerland is converging between genders.
A survey carried out by the Zurich University of Applied Science and Swisscom shows girls are increasingly likely to watch adult content – but its appeal is dropping amongst boys.
The report suggests the traditional roles of men and women in society is losing importance.
In 2010, 16% of girls watched porn – ten years later it was 27%. In the same period, the number of boys dropped from 75% to 57%.
One of the lead researchers, Gregor Waller, says it’s understandable as preferences are less linked to gender and are now more personal.
The adult industry is responding, says Waller, and is producing more female friendly content.
The study examined 1,000 young people aged between 12 and 19 across the country in all language regions.
Switzerland relies too heavily on an American NGO to detect child sexual abuse online, raising questions about the country's ability to protect children on its own.
