Autumn activities with kids in the garden
Dig It!
Wednesday, 7 October 2026 - 4 minutes
The autumn school holidays are almost here, so Hester Macdonald turns to Jean-Luc Pasquier, author of the Felco book Little Green Fingers, for ideas on getting children outdoors. His suggestions are refreshingly simple: playing in the mud, and gathering and planting the conkers, chestnuts and walnuts found in parks at this time of year.
Hester adds her own practical notes, including where to find bulbs locally, with garden centres such as Schilliger well stocked just now, and how a mixed pack of different-sized bulbs makes the perfect lasagna pot, layering daffodils, tulips, crocuses and irises at different depths. Little Green Fingers itself is illustrated throughout and available in English, German and French, direct from Felco for 9.90 francs.
