Valais village gets cash for flood defences after deaths
After two people died last year in the Valais village of Chamoson following torrential rain, the canton has agreed to a further CHF 3.5m to build flood prevention measures.
In August last year a violent storm caused the river to break its banks and swept away two cars.
One of the cars had two people in it. A 37-year-old man and a 6-year-old girl.
The body of the girl wasn’t recovered until earlier this year – the man has still not been found.
In addition to the cantonal money, the Confederation is also throwing in 2 million more.
The cantonal parliament approved the money unanimously. It’s not the first time the village has asked for cantonal support due to the flooding. It made a request in 1928 – that was also agreed.
